Our showcase anual event was held on Saturday 2nd April at the Rose Bowl. More than 50 coaches were in attendance representing all 4 districts. This year we were delighted to be able to present a line up includng 4 current Hampshire players. We offered those attending a diverse mix of practical demonstrations and class based sessions which stimualted much conversation and added to this years "goodie bag" with valuable takeaway knowledge. Below is some summary information from the day as well as a few pictures thanks to Emma Plume and Andy Nicholls for the papparazi style coverage this year.

A huge thankyou too goes to all those who gave their time not only to present but to organize this event both through the planning but also co-ordination on the day. Click the photos to enlarge.

The panel were tested with a wide range of questions from those attending, discussion points around coaching experiences and the increasing use of technology from a young age stimulated conversations that carried on throughout the day. Additionally the mental strength required by players to adapt to the demands of the differing formats of the modern game that are played and how to prepare for them gave an insight into tactical planning and thought processes at the highest level.

14:20 - 15:00 Jeff Levick, Disability Awareness (notes courtesy of Andy Nicholls)

Jeffs presentation focused on the keys, HCB CA Day 2011 HCBCA DevDay2011 Si Hammond jpg

  • Disability Aware - look for ability in disability
  • Check needs and desires with the guiding principle of 'Assume Ability' - but do remember extra attention for H&S as they may not be so aware.
  • Learning Difficulties - short attention span typically - need routine and do not complicateMaximise retention of information - Frequency- recency and Intensity
  • Physical Difficulty - Diffrentiation - be inventive and allow to adjust BUT look and discuss JOINT decisions.

Hampshire team then warmed up to show their typical warm up session focussing on inclusion and praise. Coaches then had a chance to get involved and got feedback from the young players - simple message - do talk with the player and their parents to find out what the actual problem is and then come up with a joint plan to take forward. How can you coach someone if you don't what challenges they actually have. HCBCA DevDay2011 Banner1 jpg

Feedback - Coaches felt slightly uncomfortable at first and intimidated to actually ask the player what their problem was. Jeff's comment "How can you correct anything?". Be really impartial and introduce yourself and ask - what do they find easy?, what do they find difficult. Be relaxed and this will allow you all to sort it out.
